Final Film

This is our final cut of our a2 media film, Hate Mail.

Final Film Poster

This is the final film poster that we have created:

This poster is a combination of all three ideas but the main inspiration was from Max's design. The overall layout was taken form Max's idea, but the idea of having the three images in the centre both featured prominently on both mine and James's design.

The idea around this design is to firstly showcase the three main characters as you would see in many film posters. Secondly to give the audience some clues about the film so they can create their own assumptions as to what to expect from the film. This was the reason behind having multiple objects and images overlapping each other.

The most important things in a film poster is to make sure that it is eye catching, which I feel it is due to the layered images, and to make sure all the conventions are met. This poster includes all the of the main conventions such as:

  • Title of the film
  • Tag Line
  • Eye eatching images
  • Main actors names
  • Production blurb
  • Critic Reviews

Film Radio Trailer/Spots Research

Film Radio Spots 2013 - Gravity, Pacific Rim, The Conjuring & The Great Gatsby from Angell Sound Studios on Vimeo.

Gravity: In this radio trailer you first hear the actors voices then the voice over man after saying what critics are saying 'cinematic masterpiece' and 'gloriously realised 3D.' Throughout all this there is intense music due to it being a thriller and it makes it easier to see the genre. towards the end, the voice over man then goes on the say its by Universal Studios and also the main part of the film, the 3D.

Pacific Rim: After the initial actors voices at the beginning the voice over man talks about the director as that is one of the main selling points along with Warner Bros. Also to make this film appeal to more people there was an added competition in Facebook to win tickets to see European football games.

The Conjuring: This radio trailer starts by saying this film is from the director of Saw and Insidious followed with intense music which has very sudden starts and stops trying to show the Horror genre of the film followed by church bells each time. a lot of metaphors are used such as stomach notionally tense making it sound like more of a scare fest. then at the end the age rating is said, because it is is a horror this needs to be shown as it could have been an 18, potentially narrowing the audience.

The Great Gatsby: This radio trailer uses everything it can to make the audience wider (pull factors), such as saying that it is featuring music from JayZ, Beyonce  and Lana Del Ray meaning that people that like their music may be attracted to the film another pull factor may be the main actor Leonardo DiCaprio and the director whom also made Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge.

Pre-Production Continuity Editing Exercise

This is a film we created in the pre-production stages of our film Hate Mail, to get some practice with filming and editing, this version is a longer version of the journey we filmed to practice and show we can successfully edit and film with good continuity.

Pre-Production Elliptical Editing Exercise

This is a film we created in the pre-production stages of our film Hate Mail, to get some practice with filming and editing, this version is a shorter version of the journey we filmed to practice and show we can successfully edit and film elliptically, this means cutting out a lot of shots to show a passage of time but so that the film still flows and makes sense.

Idea for a Viral Advert

If i were to make a viral advertisement for our film, I could create a 'fake' detective/police website which contains an investigation regarding the killing of  'Carlos Sanchez.' On this website there could be clues about the killing which viewers are able to piece together to win tickets to see the film.

Possible clues to the film could be, the 'shares' of partners, 'Carlos' and 'Quinceys' business dropping. Due to one of the partners being killed.
Another could be different radio trailers from 'MaxxFM' (the in-film radio trailer) talking about a businessman being killed in the bathroom of his own companies building, with only a bullet shell found next to the body.
Also a later report 3 years after on a car found outside the same building that 'Carlos' was killed with the driver found 500 yards away in a car park who had been show twice, once in the leg then the second in the head.

With all these, there could be hints the a locations, dates, and times which is where people will be awarded with merchandise and tickets.

Viral Advertising Reseach

Viral Marketing is a marketing strategy that focuses on spreading information and opinions about a product or service from person to person, especially by using unconventional means such as the Internet or email, this type of marketing depends on a high pass-along rate from person to person. If a large percentage of people forward something to a large number of friends, the overall growth snowballs very quickly. If the pass-along numbers get too low, the overall growth quickly fizzles. it is because of this reason that the people that start the advertisement need to make it engaging and easily accessible to the public.

The following website shows past examples of popular and successful viral advertising schemes for a variety of  products.

A2 Media Progress Diary 7

A2 Media Progress Diary (19/02/15-19/03/15)

Since the last post the final cut of the film has been completed and added to youtube. From this James has created a questionnaire for to be added to the youtube video to get the audiences opinions of the film. After completing the film, Max has been busy creating a radio trailer that would be used to advertise our film. I have also created a poster to advertise our film. Also during this time we have been catching up on any blog work we have missed while we were busy filming and editing our film. As all the main tasks have been completed the next few weeks will also be dedicated to completing blog work and completing the evaluation questions before the imminent deadline.

Film Poster Design

When designing this poster I wanted to incorporate motifs from our film which is why the gun, clip, bullets, phone and stamp are included.
If I were to do this poster again, using a programme such as photoshop, I would probably have all the cast members faces with in the stamp, replacing the queens face. I planned to do the same this time but my drawing capabilities aren't good enough to draw us by hand.
The idea of having the stamp is good because is symbolises the 'post' and 'mail' aspect that our film has from the hitmans delivery.

A2 Media Progress Diary 6

A2 Media Progress Diary (19/01/14-19/02/15)

Over the past month editing of the film has progressed. We have nearly finished editing the final cut of the film. The footage is completely edited, however the title sequence and sound is not. We have decided to create and film a new title sequence to add to the film as the existing one we had was not to as good a standard as the rest of the film. The majority of the film needs background music over it. We have found suitable tracks to add to the films, we just need to add these to the film. This is taking longer than expected as each track needs to be edited and tailored to fit around the footage. We have noticed a few mistakes in the film which need to be smoothed out, one of these being one of the characters dialogue being too quiet. We have decided to get a Zoom recorder and dub the sound in. Usually this would not work but the characters face is not in the shot so it does not matter if the movement of the lips and sound are out of sync as this cant be seen. Currently other blog work has been halted as we are focused on completing the final cut of the film.

A2 Media Progress Diary 5

A2 Media Progress Diary (19/12/14-19/01/15)

Since coming back from the Christmas break we have realized that there are some errors in the filming of the film that we need to correct, so we have had to re-soot our film. Also we have created a questionnaire to find obtain the opinions of the audience of the rough cut for our film. This questionnaire has been posted on alongside the rough cut of our film on you tube. The responses we got from this were analysed then used to improve our film, resulting in some changes to the film. In the coming weeks we expect to be closer to finishing the final cut of the film. Also the music in the film at the moment is basic and doesn't exactly match the film at the moment, so I will be searching to find music that suits the film better.

Re-Filming Sections

Section 1- Bedroom Scene of Hitman waking up - This section of the film is too dark, and when it came to editing it was harder to see the parts that would fit together, as action within the shots just seemed hard to define action/movement
Section 1.b- Bedroom Scene of Hitman waking up - When the Hitman goes to get his phone to take down stairs, there is a shot missing in the middle, and when it is played though it just looks like we have added a jump cut in making it flow less, also by this being too dark it makes it harder to view the Hitmans intentions to grab his phone anyway.
Section 1.c- Door scene - when the door is opened, there isntr a suitable shot of it shutting from the inside and the next best shot is of the hitman opening the parcel from the inside.
-These two sections will need re-filming with extra lighting and more choice of shots for the action sections.

Section 2 - Car Scene - We think that a shot of the Hitman driving the car would be good for when he is driving off to kill Quincey, as the shots lack a sense of the Hitman driving, so a simple close up of his face while he is in the car driving would look good.
- Getting this shot will be hard due to the character playing the hitman not being able to drive (we used another source for the driving scenes) so to achieve a sense of the Hitman driving we will have to frame the shot so that the viewer cannot see the out side, leading up to be able to do the shot while stationary.

Section 3 - Breakfast Scene - When the Hitman is getting the butter out of the fridge, the actor playing the hitman grabs the butter with different hands in different shots and we found it hard to find a shot of shutting the fridge door that matched with any other of the shots round it.
Section 3.b - Breakfast Scene - As the Hitman walks to get the toast from the toaster the camera is placed on both sides of the 180 degree line in two different shots.
Section 3.c - Breakfast Scene - as the Hitman takes
